Even though Urwerk's EMC will offer the ability to constantly monitor and adjust the mechanical movement, it will never be as accurate as the reference system. Which makes me sort of want to have a watch that operates at 16,000,000 Hz! Even more amusing is the fact that the EMC will not have a battery for the electronics that it has. It will have a hand-cranked generator that directly charges a capacitor. So yea, when you want to check the rate results of your Urwerk watch you need to wind a crank that will no doubt look extremely elegant attached to the watch, or be an easy to loose separate accessory that will cost at least ,000 (or much much more to replace).
This is the first square-style case for the brand and it looks very lovely in brushed steel with those rounded corners. The case is a perfect square being 42.4mm wide and tall. It isn't too thick at 11.6mm. Of course there is a sapphire crystal over the dial as well as for the exhibition case back window. Water resistance is 50 feet, which is understandable given that water resistance in watches with non-round sapphire crystals is difficult.
There will be three versions available this summer including not only options for both 18 carat white gold and 18 carat pink gold, but also a boutique-only steel case. The white gold case sports black nickel hands and markers while the steel-cased version will employ polished rhodium appliques. There isn't a bad choice among the trio, all sport a polished finish, display case backs, and alligator leather straps.
Forty years ago, the Concentrique was ground-breaking as it was the first wristwatch with five centrally mounted hands, offering the time, chronograph seconds, pointer date, and a GMT hand all spanning from the center of the dial. Roberts was only 20 years old when he developed the mechanism that allowed for the Concentrique, and the watch was never commercially available or put into production, until now.
Sad news today as Swiss/French watchmaker Mr. Dominique Loiseau has passed away, Gregory Pons at Business Montres reports. He was just 64 years old. Still relatively unknown to many people, Loiseau was one of the venerable geniuses of modern watchmaking, able not only to restore incredible and complex works from the past, but invent the word's most complicated watches of today.
It also helps that IWC produces some of the best functioning watch hands on the market. While the hands are technically black on a black dial, a different of tone and texture prevent them from blending in with the dial - something a lot of other pilot watch brands fail at. That and the hands are all the right size (something you know I love). One dial difference on the Top Gun version of the Big Pilot is the counterweight on the seconds hand which is a little red plane. A fun and appreciated detail. In terms of lume, the hands are slathered in it, but only hour markers at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock have applied lume. I would have liked lume on everything if I had my way.
This would likely be from old, brittle or even water damaged luminous paint. The only solution would be a new set of hands, a new dial or a dial restoration. New hands are usually covered in a regular service so if the hands are the priority, book it in for a service and you'll have a regulated, well-oiled movement, with bright new hands. Win win!
The backstory here is that Ludwig Oechslin, of Ulysse Nardin repute, was appointed curator of the museum and worked with Beat Weinmann and Christian Gafner. A high-end watch was the logical way to raise funds, and thus the MIH timepiece seen here was introduced in September of 2005. Having said that, it was the unique desire of Mr. Oechslin to not produce a timepiece that was more expensive that it needed to be. So even though they could have charged much more, they decided to keep the price (relatively speaking) low.

Turn the Quadruple Tourbillon watch over and it is business as usual for Greubel Forsey watches. The complicated in-house movement is beautifully decorated and designed, employing some of the best finishing practices the high-end horology industry has to offer. The piece contains four tourbillons in two distinct tourbillon structures. Each structure have an outer four minute tourbillon as well as an inner one minute tourbillon (how long it takes for the tourbillon to make a full revolution). You can see that the inner tourbillon is diagonally angled. It is a mesmerizing place of gears and wheels to watch in action - which is really the primary allure of wearing a Greubel Forsey timepiece. With the Secret, it is more about having a personal knowledge of what the watch contains on the inside - and not showing it off to others. How selfish do you need to be to wear this watch?
That was all the push he needed, and twenty eight clocks later, Miki has created a breathtaking portfolio of work, showing a thorough mastery of many of the typical complications that we as watch-lovers know of. Some of the complications that his clocks feature include, retrograde hours and minutes, jumping hours, minutes and seconds, moon phase and zodiac signs, musical movement functions and the tourbillon.
The video is really a PR bit for the design influences for Cadillac's new XTS model. While they call out other industries, it was very intriguing to hear them deliberately reference the watch industry - specifically, the luxury end of the market. Frankly, it's not a big leap to make, in either direction. Though it is interesting because historically (and still today) the watch industry very much borrows from automotive design when dreaming up new models. It is interesting to hear how the automotive industry is now in turn, looking to the watch industry.
Also similar to a phone? Battery life. They're estimating a 24-hour battery life with "normal" usage, but time will tell as to how this actually works out in the real world. Estimates all agree that you'll need to charge the Galaxy Gear daily just like your phone. Whatever the run-time ends up being, you're going to be throwing the watch on the charger when you get home in the evening, right along with your phone for sure - so more cords all over the place. Which I suppose is fine, given that most of the functionality is running from the Bluetooth LE (low energy) connection with the phone.
You'll notice that the tourbillon components are made from a mix of titanium (not surprising) and 18k gold (a bit surprising). The titanium is PVD treated for better color. It is all hand-polished and assembled of course. This is all under a bubbled section of the sapphire crystal and the watch height in total is 21.7mm thick. The Histoire de Tourbillon 4 cushion-shaped case will be 47mm wide with both 18k white gold and Zalium (a Harry Winston alloy similar to titanium). You can see how the front and back pieces of the watch are white gold and sandwich the middle Zalium segment.

Produced as an homage to the original Chanel Première watch collection from 25 years ago, the Première Tourbillon Volant is a beautifully designed rectangular-shaped watch with a case that is made to look a bit like a baguette-cut stone. The case shape is adapted from the original Première collection, but made a bit larger of course. Inside the watch is a special flying tourbillon movement which was produced by Renaud & Papi, continuing Chanel's relationship with the mostly Audemars Piguet owned specialty movement maker and designer.
