Richard Mille follows in Jaeger-LeCoultre's footsteps (sort of ) by creating a watch specially designed to be worn while playing polo. Jaeger-LeCoultre did this over 80 years ago with the Reverso, and now Richard Mille has the RM 053. While the Reverso was about flipping around the case to protect the crystal from shock, the RM 053 is about minimizing the dial (vulnerable area) while angling it towards the wearer like a driver's watch. Why anyone needs to wear a watch while playing polo is still a huge mystery to me. That does explain why the RM 053 will be part of a very limited edition of just 15 pieces.

"Fortis is opening up its Private Label Program to any US or Canadian business or group wanting fine Swiss timepieces for members, staff, or clients at costs far below their respective retail prices. Buying in bulk gets a great price. We reduce prices substantially for our private label customers. Of course, the final cost will depend upon quantity required, colors used, and any add-ons, such as engraving the watch back (e.g., “2012 top sales division,” “National Pennant winners, 2012″). Fortis offers private label clients a wide selection of mechanical timepieces, as well as watches from its lower-retail Fortis Colors quartz line, and only 25 watches are needed for a minimum order. Delivery can take from two weeks to six months, depending on the number of watches ordered and the extent of customization requested."

The case finishing and details are certainly upgraded from last year's prototype. You don't have to love the piece's design, but it is hard to argue that there aren't a lot of intricate details all over. I think that it is safe to suggest that the watch does fit within Romain Jerome's actual and perceived steampunk aesthetic. Technically being part of the Titanic DNA collection, the oxidized metal bezel does contain some trace metal from the titanic. On the rear of the watch it does state "Made with parts of the Titanic." On the rear of the watch you'll also see that rather cool octopus engraving - and that octopus does not look happy. Another neat detail is the design on the inner part of the rubber strap which is meant to look like tentacle suction cups. Far from wanting to look like a serious diver, this is a high-end themed novelty watch with a twist of character. It is not a good idea to ask too many "why" questions when trying to understand the watch. Just take it for what it is. Inside the watch is a Swiss automatic movement - just not sure which one. Likely sourced from Concepto as is commonly the case with RJ.

Let's face it, there are not many brands like Richard Mille. They are effectively the Pagani Automobili of the watch world as they have consistently pushed the limits and interaction of materials, technology, and design. Richard Mille is famous for their use of massively complex skeleton movements, curved tonneau cases, and exotic materials. Some readers will remember the RM056 model which was launched at BaselWorld this year featuring a case made of sapphire crystal and sporting a .65m price tag. Regardless of your opinion of their watches, you have to admire their drive to make unbelievable products with truly stratospheric prices. Consider the RM027 which features a tourbillon movement and a case made of a high-carbon composite that weighs only 13g (without its strap) and can actually float when placed in water (read more here). The RM027 carries a price tag in excess of 0,000 and is perhaps most famously known as the watch worn by tennis star Rafael Nadal. I like Richard Mille watches for the same reason I like the many iterations of the Pagani Zonda, they're insane, dramatic, and an interesting point of overlap between the passions of technology and design.

Baume & Mercier Capeland Watches For 2012 Hands-On Hands-On

The bi-directional rotating bezel for the 24 hour timezone listing is controlled via the crown at eight o'clock and uses Bremont's Roto-Click system so the crown is designed to exhibit a rather pleasing mechanical click as it is turned. This system, while requiring a fair amount of crown rotation, can be rotated to stop and hold at any point in its travel, regardless of the mechanical feedback from the Roto-Click.

The movement inside the Cyrus Klepcys is the caliber CYR598. I was surprised to learn that it is in fact an automatic. There is a micro rotor hidden in there somewhere - I believe under the retrograde date display. Mechanically the Klepcys is quite a special watch and I love the innovations as well as display of time and other indicators. Very cool to view and operate.

Material: 18-carat rose gold

Inside the Chapter Three watch is the exclusive Calibre SHC03 manually wound movement with just 36 hours of power reserve. This is even with two mainsprings, so something inside of the movement requires a lot of power. I suspect it is because of the power necessary to move the rollers.

Aside from that naming oversight, the tourbillon is really nice. Jaquet Droz uses a sapphire crystal case for the tourbillon. A bit similar in style to a flying tourbillon (but cooler), the tourbillon in this case looks as though it is floating in air as it revolves around itself. I also think that the simple looking Grande Seconde watch dials are benefited by the addition of the visual mechanics in the tourbillon. These finally look like haute horology items.

Boegli Grand Opera Limited Edition Watch Watch Releases

Jaeger-LeCoultre was actually a piece of the show before it was sold to AMC according to Weiner. As I understand it he bought a Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox alarm watch that he wanted Don Draper to wear - which he kinda does in the first season. Here is where Hollywood magic comes in. They can't actually really use expensive props on set. So things get reproduced. The prop master created a sort of make believe watch that had the case of a JLC Memovox, and a dial based on the look of a Rolex Cellini. Yes, that is part of why he got fired. No more of that under Weiner's watchful gaze.
